How wine preservers work
- Stoppers: reseal the bottle to slow air exposure. Cheap and simple.
- Vacuum pumps: remove some air from the bottle.
- Inert gas (argon): blankets the wine so oxygen can't reach it. The most effective method for keeping wine longer.
- Needle-through-cork systems: pour without ever pulling the cork.
Which one should you buy?
If you usually finish a bottle within a few days, stoppers are all you need. If you like one glass at a time or keep several bottles open, an argon system pays for itself in wine you don't pour away. Collectors who want to sample special bottles should look at needle-through-cork systems.

Wine Preserver FAQ
Do wine preservers really work?
Yes. Even a simple stopper plus refrigeration slows oxidation. Argon systems keep wine fresh far longer.
How long does Coravin keep wine fresh?
Coravin says its argon systems keep wine fresh for weeks, and its needle systems much longer, depending on the model.
Can I use a wine stopper on sparkling wine?
Use a stopper designed for sparkling wine that clamps onto the bottle to hold in the pressure.
