How to Store Wine at Home
Temperature, light, humidity and position: simple rules to keep wine tasting its best.

The four rules
- Cool and steady: about 55°F, without big swings
- Dark: UV light damages wine
- Humid enough: 50-70% keeps corks from drying
- On its side: for cork-sealed bottles stored long term
The easiest fix: a wine fridge
A kitchen fridge is too cold and dry for long-term storage. A dedicated wine refrigerator like the Kalamera freestanding wine fridge holds a steady temperature. Not sure what size you need? Try our cellar calculator.
Open bottles
Re-cork and refrigerate. Most reds and whites last 3-5 days; sparkling wine 1-3 days with a stopper.
- Reusable wine stoppers are the cheapest way to reseal a bottle.
- The Coravin Pivot Plus protects an open bottle with argon for weeks.
- The Coravin Timeless Three pours without removing the cork at all.
