Merlot Guide
Plush, plummy and easy to love: why Merlot deserves a place on your table.
What does Merlot taste like?
Expect ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry, with notes of chocolate, herbs and, when oaked, vanilla and spice. Its tannins are rounder and smoother than Cabernet Sauvignon's, which makes it approachable young.
Merlot vs. Cabernet Sauvignon
Both are Bordeaux grapes and often blended together. Merlot is softer, fruitier and ripens earlier; Cabernet is more structured and tannic. Read our Cabernet Sauvignon guide.
Where does it grow best?
- Bordeaux's Right Bank: Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, where Merlot leads the blend. See our Bordeaux guide.
- Napa Valley and Washington State: rich, polished New World styles.
